Hi, I'm a first time chicken owner. Recently I have bought 8 baby chicks:
1 Barred Rock
2 Ameraucana (Easter Eggers)
1 Silkie
1 Golden Lace Wyandotte
1 Light Brahma
1 Buff Orpington
1 Black Australorpe
They are now three weeks old and doing great but I think my Barred Rock is a roo. I have read that if they have light colored legs and a white spot on top of their heads then that usually means they are male but I was wondering if there was other ways to tell. I hope it's a hen because it's the sweetest and most docile.

Glad you joined us!

I hope your Barred Rock is a pullet! As "she" gets older, we should be able to tell for sure if you post some photos.

To clarify things, though, all Barred Rocks (pullets and cockerels) have white spots on their heads. Males usually have larger, more ragged spots, while females have rounder, small spots. That is not a 100% reliable method of sexing them, however.

We're glad to have you.

Good luck with your chicks! I hope your Barred Rock turns out to be a hen.

BantamLover X2 The white spot on the head of a Barred Rock has nothing to do with gender. As they grow up a bit, you can later post pics in our What Breed and Gender section for more help with the sex of the bird.

Enjoy your lovely flock and welcome to ours!
