Welcome to Backyard Chickens think you have been told chicken wire is open season to predators hardware cloth 1/2 mesh is the only way to go on wire sorry they can reach through chickens wire

I have a roll of ½" Hardware cloth for the chicken coop we're building, so don't worry, we're trying to do it right. Thank you for the welcome, we appreciate all the feedback.

Hello and yes welcome ! U will find this is a helpful site and everyone has their own experience!!
Yes the 1/2 inch hardware cloth is the only way to go for protection!! Especially if u plan to keep out predators that can eat thru wire - chicken wire is no match for a raccoon or opossum!
Another thing I do is on top of my coop I leave a piece of the wire attached to one side that is covering the coop and attach it loosely with slack on the other side so a predator thinks from above there is a hole but actually it is a snare type for them bc when the claws go in , they become entangled in the wire !! U may have to google to bc it Ian hard to explain !! Bc it Ian a wire snare on top of a fenced coop and our grandparents used this method to protect their flock !! So if goodness enough for them , good enough for me !!
U can also play a radio bc the noise will keep predators away and put a tarp over them for now
