Hiya, and welcome to BYC!

We haul chickens around often, and if adults, we use dog crates. Hubby puts sides on the bottom edge about 2" high with cardboard, then we put horse bedding pellets in there so there won't be a smell, and they won't be stepping in poo. I use old baby blankets to cover two or three sides to cut down on drafts and give them less distractions.

We tie a water bottle to the roof, as high up as we can. You can forgo trying to put water in there and just stop every few hours to give them some.
