So a new farm store opened in our small town and my husband saw the baby chicks and we now have 5 chickens. Who knew he wanted to raise chickens. That means I have a lot of reading and researching to do. We have 2 Black Australorps, 1 black & white Ameraucana, 1 Speckled Sussex (had 2 but 1 decided to be a rooster and we are in city limits) and 1 Cuckoo Maran. Hopefully we will be seeing our first eggs sometime around Christmas or New Years. Fingers Crossed.
We currently have a chicken tractor for them which we have in and enclosed chicken yard (so our 3 jack russells won't bother them), but I am getting ready to turn 1/3 - 1/2 of our shed into their hen house and sell the chicken tractor. I feel the chickens need more room then they get in the tractor yard. We had no idea how close we would become to some silly chickens and how relaxing/comforting it would be to tend to chickens. We are totally enjoying our new past time, and our 5 yr. old neighbor girl comes over daily to help us out. She especially loves putting them to bed and brings over extra treats for them.
Found BYC while I was looking for plans so that I can convert my shed. I have an idea of what I need to do, just need to see it on paper so I know how to do the nest boxes and perches, etc., and I have never framed a wall before. Glad to be a part of this site. Looks like I'll find a lot of great information on here.
