Hi all,

If some of you remember I posted about 2 weeks ago that one of my girls was actually a boy and was promptly letting me know a 5:18 AM every morning.

Well I found him a new home at a family farm. They actually gave me a hen in exchange. She was about the same size and guessing close to the same age.

Can anyone tell me what kind she is from this photo?

The other thing I noticed is when I placed her in the run with my other girls they started pecking and posturing on her. What is the best plan of action. I only have one coop and a large run. The others are free ranging most of the day. I don't want to come out in the morning to a battered and beat up new girl

Thanks

She looks like a Golden brahma or Golden cochin.

Any input on the second part of the post?

You could try putting her in the coop at night when your other chickens are roosting. Ideally, your chickens wake up in the morning and are fooled into thinking the newb was there all along. I'm not sure how well this works.

What I did when I had a new pullet to integrate was set up a big dog crate in the run with shavings, food and water and then I set up a smaller cage in the coop. During the day my pullet would stay in the crate and at night I'd put her in the cage in the coop to sleep. What I was aiming for was to have the others safely get used to her and not react to her. I can't tell you how it worked because the others ended up being cockerels and I had to rehome them before the pullet was completely integrated, LOL.

So I was able to keep them separated through the night. My kids went in and let them all loose and of course they all started pecking and pinning the new girl down. How long will I need to keep her separated during the day since they all get along at sleep time.

I recently added some new girls to my flock. At first I put the new ones in the pen with a partition of wire separating them from the others. I just put up a very temporary section of chicken wire. After a few days, I took the wire down. The older girls still "thump" the new ones now and then, but they are not fighting or pulling out feathers. I think it just takes a few days for them to establish their pecking order. Of course, you'll want to supervise in case they are really hurting one of the new ones.

Give them a couple days I am sure they will be just fine. I had got a new rooster and I put him in with my other rooster. 2 hours later they getting along great with each other. 2 roosters!!!!
