New chicken with lice! pics this time!

hey guys its about Rojo again and this time i have pics! you may have remebered me from the owner of Eagle Eye who is now deceased

. so to cheer me up although no hen can take the place of Eagle Eye we got one RIR. since the place me and my step dad got her at doesn't take good care of their chickens they all had lice. me and my step dad dusted her off and we took the one in the worst condition. we brought her home and put her in Eagle Eyes brooding box. of course we dusted her off and put new bedding and food with her and yes we also dusted off all the other chickens in the flock too. she looks better since we have had her for two weeks now. her bald neck has improved greatly but she still has a bald spots on her neck and head. she also has some weird looking feet. i don't know if it is bumble foot or something else or if thats just what her feet look like?

the photos are a bit blurry but it looks like she has scaly mites on her legs, rub vaseline on her legs and feet to kill the mites. If she is still suffering from lice you can give her a warm bath with gently wash her with flea and tick shampoo for dogs or cats, just be careful to avoid her eyes. Good luck!

If the pad and possibly the webbing on the feet looks puffy with a black scab(on the pad) that would be bumble foot, but then if the scales pointed off the leg that would be scaly legs.

yes the way crevecoeurcrazy23 described scaly legs is what it sounds like. so should I rub vasoline on her legs?

yes, you can rub vaseline on her legs or VetRX. You should also spray her living quarters with a spray that wiLL kill mites. Poultry Protecter is a good spray to use. Hope this can help your little girl.

my step dad just told me that in a week we will let her out in a small trailer coop by her self to get acquainted with the other hens and then we will put he the vasoline on her. he didn't want to do it now because 1. she has cedar shavings in her pen to keep the mites away. and 2. the cedar shavings would stick to her feet.

You need to go ahead and dip her feet in oil of some kind or do the vaseline. Mites damage their feet....eventually making the toes die and fall off. It also is not comfortable. The chips will fall off her feet once the oil soaks in and dries...they won't hurt her feet but the mites do. Supposedly cedar shavings are dangerous to chickens so I would switch them out and just use the oil. You also don't want her to spread the leg mites onto your property.

i don't have any vasoline at the moment but will petroleum jelly work? isn't it the same thing?
