Thank you all for such a warm welcome! 
Maybe it's because I am still very new but I don't have a smile icon anywhere that I can see.
I am using the colon and parentheses. I will have to check my settings too, I haven't gotten around to that yet. I do love the smiles and they definitely perk up a post!
I have read other posts about the dogs going after the chickens. I was thinking if I got a puppy after I got the chickens then maybe he would grow up protecting them as part of his family and be well trained. If I need to, I would put up a run for the chickens and would, of course, always be very watchful! My doggies have always been indoor family members so time "alone" with the chickens would be supervised. Any sign of trouble and appropriate steps would be taken. I am more worried about coyotes and will probably have a run set up anyway. It would be nice to have them follow me around the yard, though, like my Grandma's used to do. Grandma fenced the garden and not the chickens.
