It is sad you are going through this. We are rooting for you. I, for one, can learn through your experience. Please, post . . . who you went through for the blood work and what you learned.

Definitely get the test. It will help you make the decision regarding your birds. It will also give you more ammunition to get your money back. Or perhaps find out there is a relatively easy solution or cure. Either way, more knowledge is more power against this stuff. Good Luck!

Sega, what have the long term effects been? Do you think I should pursue returning the birds? I worry that it's apparently hereditary. How long did it take to have a rep come out and to get the results?

All the adult Marans I purchased from a guy off of Craigslist Died or where so sick that I went a head and did what had to be done to keep the rest of my chicks from dying. The vet took 3 with him to the lab for testing and those are not coming back either. I purchased 19 all together, 9 roosters and 10 hens. All of these are gone. Three of the chickens I had before the purchase have also died. The person I purchased the chickens from said that something I did caused the chickens to get sick. Did not even try to do anything except to let him know that his birds where sick. The chickens did Look very well when I purchased them. But about 7 days later they stated dying. I will find out Tuesday if the rest of my flock is infected too. A costly learning!!!!

From what the Vet said if they had never been relocated the disease may have never shown up. Something to think about.....

He's rather non chalant about it. Seems to think it's no big deal. And the MG / sinusitis seems the likeliest candidate. I think I need to do the test to see exactly what is going on. I hate to lose the rooster, he looks like he's going to be a beautiful one.

There's lots of folks you can report it to, not that there's a poultry police, but there is a HUGE grapevine of who can be trusted and who cannot.

For example:

Your state university extension office - they are often involved in tracking local poultry diseases.
4-H - for God's sake warn those parents who NOT to buy from so the kiddos don't get broken hearts and dead birds.

Grange - we have long memories and we know almost everyone

Good luck!

wow, how sad. the breeder sold you birds that he knew were sick. He probably has it running though his whole flock. I really feel bad for you.

I'm going to have to stay off of here for a while. I'm losing sleep over this. I will let y'all know when I know more.

I have three batches here I bought as chicks.Several times I have seen other older breeds I was interested in but for the fear of bringing something bad here I have not bought them.
My BFF and I are considering getting chicks together and it is possible they will stay here for a while before she gets them.I told her if that happens to keep them quarantined from her others for a while. She said I won't need to do that if they are from you and I told her even from me that she will need to.

Just finished examining the birds. The blue girl, the worst thus far, has been 24 hrs without symptoms. She's already put on weight! I turned her upside down and no ook came out. None of the others have symptoms. They seem to have potentially come out of this. I will still do the blood test and if they are carriers of whatever this was then I will try to get the breeder to buy them back.
