Yep.

Last year Naomi sat on eggs for almost 4 weeks, but they were all dead. I bought her chicks as a reward. Dinah is one of her chicks.

The barring never appeared because I didn't have an option to get a barred breed when buying chicks. The bantam choice at Tractor Supply was silkie or game bird breeds, and I don't want birds with feathered legs or feet. Dinah is an Old English Black Breasted Game Bird (OEBBGB or OEGB).

The Dominiques were black and white as day old chicks, but barring was evident within a couple weeks.

We had really warm weather, so I've not been doing heavy work outside like rebuilding the raised beds. I have the blocks, it'll get done.

Normally she explodes out of the nest box if I approach, but for the last 2-3 days she's been sitting tight, pecking my hand when I reach under her.

I left a faux egg, not sure if I should give her a couple Sussex eggs. I really don't need any OE BB gamebird/Sussex cross chicks.

You've done well with the over winter carrots. The last carrots I planted come out much like the most misshapen one in your picture; mostly because the ground is so stony. It's grow carrots and parsnips in raised beds at the field if one wants a decent crop.

I grow the mishaped carrots too. Same reason.

There's a lot of organic chunks in the soil, so I suspect that's why I have funky shaped carrots. If I sifted out the bigger particles I might get smoother, straighter carrots.

But I believe that the larger pieces of organic stuff helps with water retention, as well as feeding the plants.

As I only use the carrots in cooking their shape doesn't matter to me.
