new chicks, 1 w/ bloody stool - UPDATE IN OP

Hope your little ones make it. I had to treat my chicks with Corrid recently and they are all doing great.

The Polish is showing some small signs of improvement. There were a couple of times today that we thought it might be dead but turned out to be sleeping face down in the pine shavings. It allowed me to dip its beak in the medicated water (corid) several times this morning but by late afternoon it began to protest. I did see it eating a little here and there this evening. I let the person who sold me the chicks know and she is suggesting that the Polish may have an electrolyte imbalance and just need some molasses in water to perk it up. Any thoughts? Suggestions? It is still pretty pitiful but as I say, it does seem to be improving slowly.

I am glad she is starting to perk up!

Now to the lady who sold you the chicks... If your chicken was just a but lethargic I might have thought the same thing, however with the bloody stools...No. I am pretty positive it's cocci. Especially since you are seeing some improvement now that it's being treated for Cocci.

I hope your little one makes a full recovery!!

Molasses is used to flush the birds system. I guess it could help to flush out some cocci, but not sure if it would be ok to use while they are on meds...maybe use it after the time period of treatment is up.

Maybe someone else can help on that.

OK - thanks for the thoughts. I think I'll wait and see how things develop. I'm wondering now, when the time finally comes (in a month) to add these birds in with the others, I guess I should keep a good eye out for signs of the cocci since I don't think (but can't say for sure) that the other chicks have been exposed in the past. We got some of them at 1 day old and some were 1 wk old when we got them. The 1 wk olds were free ranging w/ mama and the flock they were in though. Can't wait for my Keeping Chickens book to arrive this week ~ I hope to find many answers to these things in there. Thank you all so very very much for your encouragement and help!!

It depends, cocci exsists in the soil, so they may have been somewhat exposed and been able to build up some resistance. But, yes, it is a good idea to watch so you can treat it quickly if they should get it.
