Welcome to BYC, and good luck with your chicks. A rooster will serve as an alarm system, but most are unable to protect the flock against a determined predator. Solid fencing and the addition of hot wire are better for protection.

I have a Kangal, he's my livestock guardian. Thought about putting my nanny kid near the coop and run. Then let my Kangal protect them.

Please don't expect roosters to protect your flock from from a bunch of cats. Roosters don't have nine lives. A few strands of electrified fencing should put the cats to flight.

Hmm, didn't think about a hot wire. I brought my fencers with me from Nebraska. My solar will do 15 miles I think. That might be enough for kitty's.
