Ok I had an australorpe hen go broody and she hatched 4 chicks. Shortly after they hatched another australorpe got in the nesting box. I went out just a bit ago and both the hens are taking care of the chicks. It's so funny, and the moms are getting along. Is it possible that the other was getting ready to go broody and her instincts kicked in with these chicks?

It is possible! I have two silkie hens that share three chicks. When one would get off the nest to eat, the other broody would steal the eggs...vice versa.
