i recently visited the local tractor supply buying supplies. anyways i walked by and saw they had chicks. well needless to say they werent in great condition (moist shavings, lost stomach feathers, irritated). anyways seems the kids at night are responsible for thier care. i felt sorry for the poor little buggers. i talked to the m,anager and he gave them to me half off. anyways got them home and in fresh dry shavings have them under a red lamp instead of a clear light like they had(it amazes me how they hire people there who know nothing about agriculture or animal care.). im also giving them red cell mineral and terramycin just to be safe. anyways my question is. was outside with them earlier and i could hear them breathing. it sounded like a soft click like a small bubble bursting. makes me imagine little mucus filled lungs, i might record a video of it. is there anyone out there who knows what it might be. am i doing the right thing in my rehabbing of the little forsaken birds. btw they are st run cornish rocks from ideal.

How good of you to bring them home to try an rehab them. How can a store like TSC not know better. Poor little things. I hope someone here can help you with your question.

How old are the chicks? Cornish rocks are heavy breathers, especially at around two weeks on. When my cornish chicks were about two weeks old I noticed the little clicking sound occasionally, if you look closely you can see their little nasal passages sucking in and out. I was worried about it too but nothing came of it, and they are almost six months old now. (With no clicking or heavy breathing.)
Also after a week cornish chicks don't need a heat lamp, it will be too hot for them. A regular light bulb will be fine for those little guys, they don't need high brooding temps like regular chicks.

yeah tractor supply is like most other chain stores in that they hire anybody. our local store is managed by the old walmart manager and he has lived in the city and has no livestock nor does he have any rural experience. the employees are dumba.. kids from what ive seen. its a shame, i like the deals they have there sometime but i dont like their feed at all. and obviously the service has a lot to be desired. i hope it really is just a thing with their breed. that noise irks me
