New Chicks Arrived! But one is pecking the others really bad!

The experts here will correct me if my advise is bad... I say give them the light... provide a space out of the light and then

Put some uncooked rice or beans into a sock tie it up and microwave it. They hold heat a good while and you can reheat them. I would be a little worried about direct contact with the hot socks but look into it.

May give a little heat in the meanwhile.

The advice on the heat has been good so far - hope you have been able to find something! As Reedyfork said, I would also look at pet stores. All the reptiles need heat, so maybe something there would help. I'm sure you would have already thought of this, but do you have a space heater?

I also wanted to suggest that you not "cull" the little meanie until you see it acting ugly when things get all figured out. Everything gets a little meaner when it's under stress.

Good luck!!!

I second the rice sock. I always give new chicks a rice sock to cuddle with. Just fill a tube sock with uncooked rice and microwave for about 1 minute. They will cuddle against it and sleep on it. You can take it out at intervals and reheat it.

I use Blue Kote on chick injuries. The color keeps others from pecking the spot. I'm in North Central Texas and feeling your pain! This morning the thermometer said 8 at my place. Seriously, 8?????

My geese skidded across the pond this morning when I let them out and tried walking around on the ice. I've never seen anything like this before.

Hang in there! Sorry your first chick experience has been so rough!

I like the hot sock idea! Very nice.

I get my smaller heat lamps from PetCo or PetSmart - - in the reptile section. There are red ones, black lights, and ceramic heat lamps that give no light. They have clamp lamps, bulbs, etc. in the reptile section.

Good luck, and please keep us posted on how things go!
