New chicks have poopy butts

We got the black sex linked last year and had a couple that had poopy butts when we got them. Everyone says the same thing we did. (Imagine being thrown in a box and shipped when you are less than a day old. I would have a poopy butt too!! lol)

ANYWAY,...we used a small bowl of warm water and old wash clothes that became chickens rags. Just keep dipping their little butts in the warm water and GENTLY wipe. Make sure to pat dry.

Good luck!!!

Everyone has already said it, but the best thing to do is to soften the poo and get it off. Then carefully trim the fuzz and/or rub a little oil or vaseline around the vent to prevent more poo from sticking. If they'll take it, plain yogurt is great. If you have grass growing this time of year, a clump of grass complete with some dirt on the roots seems to firm up their poop, too. They'll pick at it and get beneficial bacteria from the dirt. I had to check my chicks every few hours at first, but luckily the pasty butt didn't last too long. Btw - if you gave them sugar water, make sure to switch back to unsweetened water. The extra sugar will make pasty butt worse.
