new chicks here. two died.. maybe pasting??

Use a small, pointed very sharp scissors and trim the dried poop and down off. with the down gone there will be nothing for the poop to stick to. I have a special scissors that I have near my brooder box every time I have chicks. Much easier on the chick than soaking it off and much quicker. Just be careful you don't cut the little vent though, LOL.

Laurie's right...I used small, sharp scissors, as well as a warm wet rag. After all poo removed, coat the tushie with vaseline or olive oil. This seems to keep the poo from sticking the next time. You'll need to check them several times a day for the next week or so, but it does get better:p Out of my 3 "batches" of chicks, only one group seemed to have a pasty butt problem.

This is what I ended up doing. I tried to be as gentle as possible and it worked very well. Thanks for the advice.

I set a silkie on 4 eggs and none of them made it . Two eggs had nothing and 2 eggs had a dead chick. they went past their term, so when they were definately not going to hatch, I checked them just to find 2 with nothing and 2 with dead chicks. I can't imagine what could of happened. I realize that 2 eggs were not fertile, but the dead chicks is what I can't understand....what could of gone wrong? They were fully developed and ready for the world except something went wrong and they died? Could anyone give me any idea what might of happened??
