It has ben over a year now, new chicks are not allowed in CA. You can be fined and put in jail. To buy them illagelly . I do know people who sell them from 10 dollars to 20 per chick. Help

I grew up in So Cal with chickens & ducks and any other imaginable animal. The local feed stores don't have any? Check with the clerk's at feed stores they always know who has what available. Can you get an incubator and purchase fertilized eggs?
Better yet get the hell out of Cali. We defected 10 years ago to a rural area in Northern Arizona. I was 4th generation Californian. I couldn't get out of there fast enough. 😆

Not sure what the regulations are where you are but can you buy an incubator and get hatching eggs, either from a neighbor or the mail. They are not great but a lot of chicks are hatched in those cheap incubators, including with mailed eggs. Or build one yourself. You can find all kinds of instructions online.

I also am in CA. and my local feed stores do sell chicks and fertilized eggs to incubate. It is my understanding that your local city/county ordinances decide the chicken/ chick laws.
Good luck to you!
