New Chicks, Intestinal Upset in Humans??

Quote:
My wife came down with a case of this a few days after we got our chickens. It was
brutal. She ended up in the ER. Me and our son weren't affected. My wife works
in a hospital and the doctors all thought she got it there, not from the chickens.
We were even contacted by the local Health Authority since this illness is tracked
nationally.

I doubt this is what your family has. It is BRUTALLY painful and lasts a while. It's
a srong form of FOOD POISONING. It sounds like you had a viral thing floating
around your house.

I'm an idiot with my chickens. I've bit them, handled them then bit my nails, and broke
all the rules. Well, I don't eat raw chicken although I hear they like it in Japan.

First of all, never be embarrased by anything you type here. We are all friends.

What you are saying is chemically and biologically impossible. You are just noticing
scents you don't usually notice or your mind is messing with you a bit.

dbjay417, Cats are not clean animals. Cats allowed to go outside are carriers
of tons of viral and bacterial pathogens. It's all about exposure.

There's nothing like a strong immune system.

Thanks so much for the reassurances, guys.

I was pretty sure I was being paranoid, but no harm in checking, right? I blame the dire warnings on all the websites and books about careful sanitation...

DS's tummy seems to have improved, and no further signs of distress in the rest of the household. Chicks are growing and cheeping (and a few, I fear, crowing!) and eating and pooping and generally being tiny, fluffy, proto-chickens.

I second that... Raw meat, raw eggs, share food with chickens, eat food after handling chickens and chicks without washing my hands, eaten stuff off the floor... even though I have birds walking around on it..... some day I'm bound to get sick, but hasn't happened yet. 10 years of not following the rules so far.

Being overly clean can lead to sickness just as sure as being a slob can.

Just think about how most vaccines work, being exposed to small ammounts of bacteria and virus' helps your body to fight future infections.

Stay away from antibiotics and hospitals unless your near death, and dont be afraid to get dirty every now and then. Its good for you!

Amen, dbjay!!!!! It's really not good for us to isolate ourselves from the organisms that live in our world. We have to build up an immunity to the harmful ones and the only way to do that is through exposure!!!!

I was thinking the same thing. It is probebly a good thing that your little one is being exposed early, and is now building an immunity to germs and such. We are way to sheltered sometimes in the name of sanitation.
