We just got our first chicks yesterday! My question, though, is if I can move the first two chicks from their brooder inside to back out with mom in the coop. Should I do this at night? Momma hen was pecking the first chick, which is why we took him out along with his sibling. The third chick hatched last night, and momma seems to have accepted it. I think I may have acted too quickly with the first two. The momma is very mothering. I think she would accept the first two without a problem, but I just want to be sure.
Thanks!

I'd try it. A lot of times mama pecks at the chicks to tell them to get back under her and stay warm or to tell them to not wander off. There is a difference in discipline and I'm going to kill you.
Some hens have killed their chicks, however, especially first time mothers. It is rare, but it does happen and may be hard to tell the difference, especially if you are inexperienced. I'd be sure to observe mama's reaction when you do it. Instead of at night when you might not be there when they wake up, you might try putting them in a small cage next to her and see how mama reacts. Odds are, she will want them and you can just release them.

Well, I put them with her this evening. She had two other chicks hatch without any problems; I put the first two in with her and she was fine! She started clucking at them and trying to put all the chicks back under her (one of the younger ones had come out to see what was going on). I showed the chicks to the rooster, too, at a distance. It was one of those moments when you can tell exactly what the bird is thinking. In this case it was: What. Is. That.!? All the chicks seem to be healthy, there's a fifth chick coming! Thanks for helping!
