New chicks seem very lethargic...

I"m seeing it from the other way. I think the chicks may be too warm.

If ambient temp is 76 degrees, and you have a heat lamp ( a big ol' red heat lamp?) only 18 inches from the chicks, they're going to cook. A heat lamp of that size in a plastic bin that small, the chicks really can't get out from under the heat very well. And at 2 weeks, they should be spending a fair amount of time out from under the heat completely.

My brooder is a livestock trough, with the heat lamp set above the level of the side of the trough. In my un heated, un insulated garage. My 2 and 3 week old chicks are pretty much evenly scattered over the brooder when I check on them...some under the heat, some at the other end eating or drinking or pecking at the dirt I put in there.

I think you need a larger brooder.

I think you need to raise the heat lamp a bit and angle it so there's a definite cooler space for the chicks.

food and water should be in the cool space. If there's not enough space to keep the water from getting heated by the heat lamp, there's not enough space for the chicks to get out from under the heat.

A chick raised by a broody hen, at 2 weeks, is going to be out from under momma for several hours at a time during the day, no matter how cold it is. Being under momma is warm and cozy, but it's boring and there's nothing to eat there. So, they're out and about doing chickie things quite a bit, then pop back under for a warm-up. A brooder should allow them to mimic that.

Hi PD Riverman
Thank you for your replies! I think they were hot as you posted two of them had wings spread out. I am going out to get a thermometer tonight so I will know for sure what temp they are at. I was a bit worried when I went to the store to get them because they all seemed lethargic and I almost went to tractor supply to get them but I wanted a certain breed that tractor supply didn't have. I can only have a few chickens because I live in a residential area. After I turned off the light I went have and checked on them and they were all up and eating and I seen most of them drink. So I have made sure that they can get warm or cool with the way I put the lamp and a board.
Thank you so much for the info!

I do not know if you missed it or not-----You DO NOT need that red heat lamp----unscrew the bulb and put about a 60 watt----hang the lamp holder down inside the "brooder" on one end where its about 90 degrees right in the middle of the brightest part of the light on the floor. I have brooded 1000's and have never used a 250 watt red heat bulb----those bulbs have fried/killed many chicks. Most of the time for 6 I use a 25 or 40 watt.

Hi All,
Wow I don't know how I missed so many posts. AS a update I got them a huge trough and a thermometer. By the evening they were up and eating and drinking and scratching young they way I would have expected them to. Today they seem really good and much better then they looked yesterday thank god I was worried about them. But I was very happy to see they were happy and kinda chatty today. This is a great website thank you for all the help ! I have forgotten so much in 25 years.

So glad to hear they are doing good and making you happy! They will enjoy the bigger space
