New chicks

Hello and welcome to BYC! There’s so many helpful, knowledgeable folks here and I’m sure you’ll find this site a very useful resource. I hope you enjoy it as much as we all do.

How long has your chick been peeping loudly? When that happens to me it usually means he’s escaped or got stuck! But if that’s not the case then I’m not sure. It took an hour of peeping once before I realised it was coming from the back of the brooder and one was stuck! He had got out underneath the netting somehow.

Hello all! I’ve visited this site for years, reading and absorbing tons of knowledge. Finally became a member. About to get my first batch of show quality birds. Looking forward to sharing and asking opinions!

Hi Pigzfan! Me too. Same story (except I’ve had chickens twice in my life now- most recently for the past 3 years- since March 2015). I’ve been a member for about 3 years (August 2015), but mostly just come to read, not comment too unless I’ve had an emergency. Trying to figure that commenting thing out a little more today. Not sure how that’s going.. how many mistakes I’ve made that’s really obvious to the long time users, but trying anyway. It’s confusing sometimes! But, I love this site. It’s been such a huge help to me. There was no internet at all the first time I had chickens- and I was mortally lost with them. They all ended up running off to a neighbors barn- and that was the end of that for about 15 more years! These ones seem to feel a lot happier and better understood! :celebrateYay! Anyway- welcome!

Yes! Sorry still learning!
All of these experienced BYC people are getting a heavy dose of us noobs today haha! Someday we’ll be BYC virtuosos, and we’ll look back at our old posts and laugh..or roll our eyes... while we’re trying to be patient with the annoying noobs too. Sorry all of you BYC commenting veterans, we’re trying! :D

Chicks may cry because they are too hot or too cold, hungry or thirsty or other chicks are bullying them away from food and water, or something is hurting them. If you sit and watch from a distance you can observe what is happening.

It's like having a baby, they can't talk and say what bothers them either, so you go through a process of elimination.

Have you checked the chick for pasty butt?? It is very common and if ignored, can end with the death of the chick. Chicken poo gets stuck on their behind and prevents them from passing any more poo. The chick needs to be wiped off with a warm washcloth, and then put some vaseline around the vent to hopefully prevent more poo from sticking.

Sometimes you need some soapy water to clean up the chick as well, and rinse and dry the chick when you are finished. They can get chilled easily.

G’Day from down under KCchicks :frow Welcome!

Well, I am officially confused! :lau

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
