Since this is new to me (as of today) I was wondering when I start adding the chick grit to the feed. And how much? Do you mix it or keep it separate. The bag says two weeks old. These chicks were born 5-13.
glad you have joined us and congrats on getting your new flock.
IMO I would honor the chick grits directions. Personally I added small amounts to their feed about 2 weeks old when I started giving mine a few dried mealie worms. If they have only chick starter then they don't need grit to digest it. If you start to give any chick appropriate treats, then you will need to give them grit.
Thanks! I only have chick starter. So I guess I have another week. Can I start giving them treats at two weeks? They are good eaters and drinkers after just one day. Yay! I hope they're girls.
Treats shouldn't make up more than 10% of their food, chicks can get spoiled as fast as kids with candy. Then they don't want to eat their nutritionally balanced feed. and growth and health can eventually suffer.
Welcome to BYC and the coop! There's a lot of great peeps here! Feel free to ask lots of questions. But most of all, make yourself at home. I'm so glad you decided to join the BYC family. I look forward to seeing you around BYC.
