We just finished building a larger coop for our hens. We have 3 established girls (2 silkies & 1 seabright) and the new coop is in the same run they have always been in. We also have 6 almost eight week old pullets who have been in our garage but with the big girls for supervised time together outside during the day. We decided to take the plunge today and put them together for good. Which may not have been smart given it was probably stressful for the big girls having a new (much larger) coop and the addition of the pullets at the same time. Some squabbles but no injuries or anything. I had to put everyone inside the coop bc they did not put themselves in (I guess understandable?) but inside no one is roosting! Everyone is sleeping on the floor! Will they eventually roost? Was it wrong to put them in a new coop? I thought it would be sort of “even territory” if that makes sense. Anyway, wish me luck bc I’m anxious. Our coop ended up much larger than I thought inside our enclosure which made it so we had to do a two level ramp. It’s raised so they still have the full run and we’re also expanding the run next.

We expanded our coop last year. It used to hold about ten (now it holds all thirty of my birds) and when we expanded, (if I remember correctly) they all learned to roost pretty quick again. I wouldn’t be worried if they sleep on the floor for a night or two. Chickens know to be high up and will roost if they want. We also have a mama and four chicks sleep in a brooder below the roost, and two bantams that can’t fly up to the roost, so they sleep on the floor.
But I wouldn’t be worried. They’ll be fine. It was also very smart to expand your coop. It was great when we did.
