LWe have a shed in our backyard that had long ago been a workshop and barn for piggies. We converted 1/3 of the shed into a chicken coop just last month. We used some wood and other supplies we had laying around but did have to get more write for the run, a wooden door for the entrance, and wood to frame up the run.
The nest boxes are pieces of scrap 2x12 on a L shaped back made of 1x12. They are approx 18 inches off the floor and now have strips of 1x2 to hold chicks and eggs in the nest. Flooring is vinyl so the cracked concrete is mostly covered. A piece of platypus makes up the front half of the bottom portion. Green fiberglass panels cover the bottom portion toward the back. My dh just recently made the roost that we can rotate up out of the way to clean. We plan on using straw since we can get it free from family. The run is 4x4 corner and center posts with 2x4 supports and covered in wire. It is 16x8 feet. If we end up getting many roosters from the babies the mommas are hatching, they will be free-range to eat all the gross nasty ticks and grubs from the yard until they are old enough for dinner. The manure we will be creating a compost heap to fertilize next years garden. Hmmmm, trying to get my images to post.
Building the run.
Ready for chicken wire
Door into coop
Looking in(before the roost was installed)
Those were all taken back in May. New pics with covers over nest boxes, and the roosts and other equipment. Covers were because they kept roosting in the boxes and poopin in them.
Here is today after I cleaned it.
