So we have had our 2 pekin ducks for 2 months now. We had them in a very small coop just at night to sleep in. We just finished our coop today with a big run. We put the ducks to bed and they are having a fit. Pacing back and forth and waiting by the door. I feel bad that they don't feel comfortable. What can I do to make them feel comfortable? I know it takes time but I feel bad. Do they need a box to sleep in? They are only sleeping in the run right now that is completely safe. The inside were they would sleep isn't done yet. Thanks in advance.

If they are in an open, though predator proof 'run', IMHO, they don't know that the run is safe and likely do not feel safe enough to sleep.

Our ducks have an open, predator proof pen, and an enclosed sleeping 'barn'....and every evening at dusk, they go into the enclosed barn - where they are, and I'm sure feel, safe enough to sleep.

Perhaps a large plastic dog kennel/crate or other temporary closed area where they might feel more protected until their coop is complete?

If they are used to a smaller space then perhaps a box or basket or the addition of a low wall may help. I found having a party in the new space, with treats, helped.

Ducks are ritualized, so their panic comes from the change. You could give them something to make them feel more secure until you finish. They will adjust in a few days, but they should have something with a roof and three sides where they can get a break from the elements including the sun.

They are funny little buggers! ;)

Thanks for the quick responses. We went back out to settle them down a little. We opened the sleeping part up and put them in there. We didn't finish insulting the flooring for winter and put something on it to clean easily. Right now it's just wood. Put them in there and they didn't like that. They came back out so we found a big plastic box that we put on its side and put a bunch of hay in that. They seem to be better now. It is completely dark here now and the ducks finally are quite. Hope they adjust fast.
