New Coop, if money was no object

I take it your husband doesn't want to do carpentry work.
The coop you like (per your link) can be built on site with just a few tools and untreated lumber so you don't have to worry about chickens pecking at copper treated wood. If you use redwood or cedar the costs go up quite quickly.

I built an 8 x 8 coop for under 300.00 and that was with a metal roof. Your mileage may vary but If I had not had some of the lumber on hand already, I still could have built my coop for under 500.00.

The reason the cost is so high for the one you linked to is because it is built of either redwood or cedar, has a metal roof, is built by a company that has to make some profit after material costs and labor costs are paid out. If you can do it yourself, you can have your coop and pay for bedding and feed too.

You take it right. He is not that good at it and doesn't seem to want to learn. He has built a couple things already, including an 8 by 16 shed, a covered deck and a small chicken coop and they turned out ok, but every time something needs built, it turns into a big brew ha ha.

He is going to build the chicken coop himself, whether he wants to or not. I might be able to get a son-in-law to help out here and there. I wanted to hire someone to do it, but that is cost prohibitive. We aren't on a real tight budget, but we can't spend thousands of dollars either, which is what it would come to if I hire someone.

I am hoping to come in under $1500 for a 5 x 7 raised coop and a 21 x 7 covered run all enclosed in hardware cloth and possibly lattice. I want a good, solid wood roof with shingles or metal roofing. We can get 3 or more feet of snow in one storm, so it needs to be sturdy. I wanted a peaked roof, but will compromise and have a shed roof because he will flip out if he has to do those peaks. I will help him as much as my health allows me to.

I have most of what we need for inside the coop, as well as some vintage windows, but we will be purchasing the wood, hardware cloth and so forth new. I would rather go slow and get it done right as I never, ever want to go through this again!

That's way too much money for that coop. I suggest you shop on Amazon for your hardware cloth. There is a company on there that sells it at half the price of builders supply stores with free shipping. I bought a roll 3 ft. wide by 50 ft.long for $56.00.
