If 12x12x12 is the best size for a nesting box what if it is a little larger?

Oh that should be fine. 12x12x12 is kind of the minimum. It should be big enough for them to be able to stand up in and turn around, but small enough to feel cozy and isolated enough from the rest of the enclosure.

That makes sense. What is the best ratio of hens to nesting boxes?

It depends on how many are laying. I had 1 for every 3 hens, and there were occasional lineups, but it seemed ok
