I am building a 6x12 coop approximately 6ft tall for some sex links, They free range daily. Out in the morning locked up for the night. what is a comfortable number of birds I can house in a coop this size? Thanks for you help.

The usual rule of thumb tossed around on this site is 4 sq ft per chicken indoors, with 8-10 per chicken in the run.

It depends on your climate though... if you live in, like, Hawaii

and they will want to spend most of their time outside, you may be able to get away with less indoor space without courting too many problems. But if you live in a climate where there will be stretches of time when they just don't WANT to go out (depends also on what kind of protected outdoor area they may have access too), you'd want to err on the side of larger rather than smaller.

My chickens actually ahve about 15 sq ft per chicken indoors, plus runs, and I really wouldn't want to go much less than that *for my tastes* because they really do seem a LOT more relaxed and happy and natural than with less space.

At 4 sq ft per chicken, a 6x12 coop could hold, what, 18 chickens (edited to correct math

Have fun,
