There is news on how covid affects animals on a site for backyard animal keeping:
Many more mammals are susceptible to the virus that causes Covid-19 in humans. Sheep, cows, pigs, donkeys, ferrets, hamsters, rabbits have cells that the virus can attach to. That does not mean that these animal species, such as mink, get sick or are contagious to each other or to humans.
An international team of molecular biologists and other scientists has investigated the susceptibility of other animal species to the virus. They looked at changes in the activity of host cells that are responsible for binding with cells of the virus.
Mammals that can potentially become infected with SAR-CoV-2. Low values mean a higher risk of infection.
We wanted to know which animals might be at risk for infection in view of further investigation and possible monitoring, '' said Christine Orengo of University College London in a commentary. Tigers, lions, cats, dogs, rabbits and ferrets were already known to be infected with the virus, but it has not yet been established that they are also contagious to other species. The fact that minks can be a source of infections, can infect each other and people with covid-can-infect each other and people has been proven on a large scale in the Netherlands.
Animal species sensitive to SARS-CoV-2 could serve as a reservoir, the researchers warn. That several mammals can carry virus is no surprise, according to the researchers. The current pandemic has zoonotic origins. The fact that companion animals and farm animals are also susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 is something to be aware of, as these animals are in close contact with humans.
