Hey everyone! So about a year ago-crazy to think about- i hatched a little Duck named Waffles! (He still hasn't come back yet but my fingers are still crossed!) Anyways i just got some new duck eggs but i'm worried about how they are doing. I ordered an incubator, but it hasn't come yet so i have them under a lamp. When we first got them, they were pretty cold so i put them in a box under a lamp and put some foil around it to trap the heat. I came back later, and the eggs were really warm! I was so scared that i killed them! However, i don't know how old they are, and i candled them and i saw in three of them (There are 5) A black spot with veins around it. In one of them there is nothing and some liquid looks to be moving around, so i'm worried that one is dead :( And the last one looks like it has an embryo, but its at the bottom of the egg and there are only a couple of veins.
So you don't think i boiled of froze them? How old would you say they are? Sorry i'm still kinda new even though i had waffles, but he hatched just a few days after i got him, so i have never incubated eggs this early in their developmental stage. I just hope my incubator comes soon!

Oooh, wee. I am not a hatcher, but I agree, the incubator needs to get there.

I know there is turning, proper heat and humidity (there is a difference between wet bulb and relative humidity, by the way, so make note of that).

There is a sticky on hatching waterfowl eggs. It is in the goose section but goes for ducks, too, I am told.

Thank you Amiga! The incubator still hasn't come, sadly, but that article was really helpful!

Please keep us updated. There are some experienced hatchers here, just look at some of the threads on hatching and you can find out who they are and perhaps contact them.

Well I wouldn't have put them under a lamp??? The cooler the better. the heat is only going to make them start developing. That's why we incubate.. So it sounds like they did start to develop. Well you can't stop now, if you do, they will not make it. You are going to need to keep them warm and continue until you can get them in a bator. they should be laying down.. you might as well mist them three times a day too. LOL

You really can't tell how old the egg is by looking at the egg? If you have development sounds like they aren't to old..

your gonna need to keep them under that lamp, turn them three times a day and mist them. Keep this going until your bator arrives...

If you have a temp and humidity gage, put that next to them, keep temp up to about 101 and humidity can stay low for now. But you must turn them otherwise they will stick to the side of the shell and they will stop growing..

Waffles hasn't come back? What do you mean? You know your not suppose to release domestic ducks into the wild right?

Well, i had to put them under a lamp because they had already started developing because i got them from a friend who found them, and knew that i had raised ducklings before. I know it isn't the right thing to do, but i can't put them back now.

Waffles flew away because he is a wild mallard whose mom died when i found his nest.

Did your incubator come yet?

Well do the best you can as far as keeping the temp up and humidity at around 20 or 30, this is going to be the most buzzar hatching if your successful. LOL BUT it's not an impossible one..
