New Duck Mama :) Are Chux pads/bedliners safe to use in brooder?

Against my better judgment, I tried using the puppy pads yesterday. My ducks and goslings had ripped one of them apart within 1 minute and were attempting to eat the insides. So I buried the pads under a thick layer of shavings, and that lasted all of about an hour before they had pulled the edges of the pads out and were chewing on them, again. So, I do not consider the puppy pads to be a successful experiment, and I do not recommend their use. I used the biodegradable pads and I am not concerned that they ate any of the stuffing. Chux pads do not have biodegradable insides and are a petroleum based product, so I REALLY don't recommend their use.

CMV, I had the same experience. Now I am layering - I put a full-sized bath towel over the pee pads, and fold under the towel sides so that none of the pee pad is exposed. I have to put rocks around the edges, because the little guys still try to pull up the towel. Not the best solution, but after my runner ducks started eating the pine shavings, and then trying to tear apart the pee pad, it's the best we can do until they move to their new duck house outside.

I wonder if the likelihood of them pecking/tearing/eating pee pads has to do with the breed?

My khaki Campbells are getting ready to go outside... Been using towels in the brooder but now they are so big... Woke up this morning to a tote full of squeaky rubber duckies covered head to flapper in poops.... I will be trying some dollar store puppy pee pads with a towel over them to catch the useful manure and discourage picking ... I'm feeling hopeful
