Hello!

(1) Are you new to ducks / when did you first get ducks?
I'm still fairly new with ducks. I've had my current flock for about 6 months.

(2) How many ducks do you have right now?
I have ten, but looking to downsize a bit soon. I've been running a trial of a few breeds to see what I want to raise long term.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Welsh Harlequin, Saxony, Duclair, Swedish Blues, and Indian Runner. I'm stuck between wanting to raise primarily Welsh Harlequins or Saxony ducks.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard ducks?
They provide a lot of benefit for my garden, I love the fresh eggs, and I have a park bench in my duck run and it's nice to go sit out there and watch them and feed some peas.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Music, DIY stuff, gardening, etc.

What a nice assortment of duck breeds! It would be fun to see some pictures if you'd like to share.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Sounds like you have a lovely flock of ducks! You will definitely want to stop by our Ducks forums for help, chat and sharing photos... https://www.backyardchickens.com/forums/ducks.42/

Good luck to you and welcome to our roost!

Thanks! I'm there reading a bit now.

It is a lovely flock, but I am looking at settling on either a single breed, or a set of breeds to mix eventually. I like the qualities of the Saxony and Welsh Harlequins, but it seems like genetic diversity is a little lacking at times, and some of the groups I can get stock from have declining egg yields because of it. I've thought of cross breeding the two to help give them some genetic diversity, but not sure if that's something that would help or not.

:welcome It’s wonderful to have you here! I like the look of both of your preferred breeds, but I like the Blue Swedish Ducks best (I’ve only owned Pekin and Muscovy though)! Perhaps you might be interested in them?

I have two Swedish Blues, and I know personality and what not is very individual dependent, but they're really not my favorites. They don't lay as many eggs, and they seem much more skiddish than all my other breeds. The blue color is neat, but I like the Saxony's and Welsh Harlequins a bit better that way. That's not to say they're not a fantastic breed, just that my experience with these other two breeds have been slightly better.
