Hah! I am prepared for this: A large jar of duck-poop sits on my desk and this morning Katarina Duck pooped on my left foot while gulping down meal-worms and cat-knibbles. She quacked that it's good for the skin…

You are correct! The blue runner is slightly bigger than the chocolate.

I am in about the same climate as you and my ducklings are just 5-6 days old. I've been struggling with what to do at night too because the garage is like an oven during the day. So to be safe I've been putting the light on when I go to bed and since they're in a pool like yours are they can get away from it or get under it. Seems like the littler ones do and the bigger ones move to the other side.
