New Ducks

Getting a drake Muscovy might be a little big for your Runner girls the drakes are pretty hefty
and may hurt the Runner since they are a smaller breed. and yes if you live on a lot of property where you don't have to worry about your Scovys landing in some ones yard that has dogs it is fun to watch them fly. Most of us don't have that luxury I don't have neighbors but I do have a body of water close by and don't want to lose my ducks from floating down river.

so should I separate them from the runners during mating season? also i do have a coverd run do to the abundance of hawks and turkey vultures in my area. Thanks for all your help!

It might be a good idea to do so. Excellent! Your very welcome.

Our closest neighbors live several miles down the road on different ranches, so we don't have to worry about our ducks flying into their yard, thankfully. The only water within several miles of our house is in their kiddie pools, so we don't have to worry about that either.
Several of my smaller females have gotten severely hurt from the big Muscovy boys jumping on them. For the better good of everyone, it's best to keep them separated.

Miss Lydia, how do you keep your ducks from getting into the river?

Yes I do Aspen call me over protective but there is about 75 yards from here to the river and woods in between and since it's not our property they would have to cross to get to it I can't do anything about it. So they live with Kiddy pools and don't mind a bit. Actually My oldest drake came from the river close to 10 yrs ago. Lots of predators around here.

OK so I do want a male, would a muscovy female get lonely if I got 1 muscovy female and 1 BO male(buff orpington)? cause you say the kinda keep to themselves. The reason I want a male is because 1 my neighbors dog died

that dog was sooo sweet and would come hang out with my dog, buuuuuut now that it is gone my neighbors said that they dont mind if my ducks go in their yard so I am going to try a little free ranging with girls and want a boy to be their protector in a way. 2nd I want some babies.

Yikes! I would be a constant wreck thinking about them getting out! Do you have a covered run? How neat! Is that how you got started with Muscovys?

I would get a pair of Muscovys, and maybe a pair of Buff Orpingtons. I think Muscovys need a companion of their own kind to hang out with.

I clip wings and they all are in a 1/2 acre fenced in piece of our property, They do get to come out when I can be with them but I haven't ever had one go that far from the house they usually stay right here.

Just my 2 cents which doesn't amount to much but since you already have Runners and they come in such an array of colors why not just stick with that breed 1 drake to 3-4 ducks.

I wish I could get 2 of each but my 14ftx 10ft pen with 4ftx6ft coop attached to the outside just is not enough space.

Could I get 2 muscovies and just separate them during breeding season?
Yep but wouldn't that mean building a separate run and coop? and then if the drake ever breed one of your Runners and you hatched her eggs those ducklings will be sterile. Muscovy's can mate with non Muscovy's but their off spring are sterile.

I would just put up netting in the middle of my pen and split it into 2 7ftx10ft sections. and the only reason I would seperate them is because the muscovy males are so much bigger and i dont want one of the runners getting hurt.
