"New Egg" introduction

Your chicks sure seem to like hanging out in the coop. Am sure when they start laying eggs for you all the work you put in the coop will be worth it.
My avatar is a Frizzle Sumatra, the frizzle gene makes the feathers curly, you can find it in a lot of breeds. Frizzle Cochins are really popular, here is Feathersites page on them http://feathersite.com/Poultry/CGD/Friz/BRKFrizzles.html

WOW, that page is interesting, it makes me wonder how much the distorted feathers would effect their flight capabilities, doesn't seem like you would even have to clip wings on chickens with FRIZZLE feathers like that, or can they still fly ?

They are interesting looking aren't they. Usually their primary wing feathers are affected enough they can't fly at all, especially the heavy breeds. Though some like that Sumatra still can to some extent, just not as well as a bird with normal feathers. The gene is an incomplete dominant, and birds with two copies will be a lot more affected, but there are also genes that reduce/modify the expression of the gene, so just depends on what the bird has.

Do you have enough vents for good ventilation? Very important for healthy birds, maybe I just don't seem them. I bet the girls would also love a window to allow some light in, and for them to enjoy the view. Are you using chicken wire? It won't keep predators out. 1/2" hardware cloth will if securely fastened to posts.

Thank you Gander 007, here is a picture of the inside.

Oh now that is nice I bet them chickens like the wide beams to roost on .....

See mine like the wide 2 X 4 to roost on as chickens like to sit on their feet to keep them warm and with a branch the feet have the opportunity to get cold and freeze so you did that perfect .......

And my nesting boxes are on the floor for brooding hens and the chicks can jump out when it is time to go and yes it makes it difficult to bend over to get the egg's but normally chickens put their nest on the ground not up high ........

Yes, there are two vents, one on each side, here is one pictured.

I doubt there is much that can get thru chicken wire around here, especially with our German Shepherd on vigilant guard duty. All we have around here are possum & Raccoons, neither of which can come in our yard without encountering the fight of their life, and so far, our dog has won every time.

I didn't have a window to put in, but when I run across the right one, I will put it in for sure, thanks for the great idea.
