New Egg New to New Jersey!

Welcome to BYC!

Welcome to BYC! I'm not from New Jersey, but I'm glad you decided to join our flock. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. What kind of chickens do you have?

I got 4 juvenile chicks from McMurray Hatchery, although the birds actually came from their affiliate in Texas. I got an assortment for egg color and I liked the chickens that laid them. So, 1 of each: Americauna, Black Australorp, Buff Orpington and Cuckoo Marans. They are 11 and 12 weeks old now and the run is nearly ready for them. Someone is coming this week to help me getthe hardware cloth up and then they go in!

Today I got 1x6 boards to keep the sand in the run. Got hit in the face with a 2x4, but it and the roost are the final touches.
For now!

That's a great mix of breeds you have. I currently have all of them except the Cuckoo Marans, and I've had them in the past. Actually our Ameraucanas are not true Ameraucanas, but Easter Eggers (which is the case with most owners) as true Ameraucanas lay only blue eggs. The Easter Eggers are my granddaughter's favorites as she loves the different colored eggs. The Black Australorps are my personal favorite standard breed as they are very hardy, calm and gentle, and the best layers of the standard, brown egg laying breeds. I have ordered from Murray McMurray several times and have been happy with their service and birds. Good luck with your flock.

I am a little concerned that my EE/Americauna might be a roo. I am seeing what I think may be saddle feathers. Will try to get a pic of the bird in question up tomorrow. They have gone to bed already and the video I took today disappeared. Mysteries of life.
Do you have a pic of an EE roo?

I don't currently have any roosters. All 25 of my chickens are hens. But here's an EE rooster pic I googled from http://preservinglifeatferncreek.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/rooster.jpg. The greenish legs and rainbow of colors are typical of EEs as opposed to true Ameraucanas, which have slate colored legs and are more uniform in color. We should be able to tell when you post your picture tomorrow. I hope you have a hen. Good luck.
