are you all following the milford nh swap thread? just wanted to make sure you are all aware? did i do that already?? if so , sorry

ahhh! i totally missed the info on the west gardner swap. darn!!

we just hung our nesting boxes about a week ago and the chickens have yet to lay in them. i have found one egg in front of one of the boxes and two outside. i put some plastic eggs in the nesting boxes b/c i think i read to do that on here.

after my hubby is done building a chicken plucker we will be putting some in the freezer. probably about 10.

that will leaves us with 12 hens and a rooster.

can anyone give me some ideas on snacks for the chickens b/c they run when we get near them usually and i want them to be more friendly?

also, any suggestions on how to winterize our coop. we have a heat lamp and are probably going to insulate the walls.

Hi Bubbaz, you do not need to insulate the coop, just make sure you have the ability to cut down or prevent drafts. You know those down coats you put on and how warm they are...its chicken feathers.
Personally I don't like the heat your coop in winter as chickens produce a lot of dust that gets flameable, when the power goes out, they will become overly cold, not building enough down to keep them warm. If they are old enough to lay eggs, then they are fully feathered enought o wean off that light!
I had one coop that I wrapped up to the roof with plastic. The roof was only aluminum roofing. The hens and geese lived very well in the building (separate pens). Like with our own houses, if you close in tight, then it can have gasses buildup and make them ill.
Treats are whatever you give them. Peelings, lettuce, cooked veggies (they love it) and grapes are my gils favorite. They love sweet stuff, watermellon and bread.
Good luck!
