New Englanders! Much ado about New England!

is it possible to find breeders at county fairs? we have the Goshen fair here. Now that I'm a chicken owner I can go in the chicken barn and almost know what I'm looking at!

I'm in Massachusetts -Quincy- anyone have chickens in Quincy? I'm a chicken lover and looking for a little chix project and yes who doesn't like fresh eggs? My little ones are crazy over chickens!

welcome to BYC!!!

If you need hens that are already laying, I"m willing to part with some of my girls. PM me for more info. You should be able to find chicks at the feed stores. Try the yellow pages on line for the feed stores outside the city.

Yes. Of course it depends on what your expectations are. I would say this is a good place to start if you want real non-hatchery stock. Do not assume the birds are non-hatchery because again, some of the hatchery stock is quite good. YOu might enjoy meeting others who enjoy chickens too.

Hi Arielle tried to pm but I reached my limit of 2 pms so u dont get to msg today? Don't understand that. Yes I'm looking for laying hens that are good temperament and lay nice Brown eggs. Was thinking to have 3. Not sure how that would work out where I live in Quincy but I'd consider housing them with someone who has a flock nearby I'd be happy to help with expenses.and would visit and get eggs . Any ideas? How much work is Involved with 3 chix? And egg yield? Thanks

We can converse here-- build up your number of posts and you can PM again. IT is to filter out the spammers.

People choose different ways to deal with chickens in the city. Some cities allow chickens others do not. Hens are quiet and dont make much noise; in fact they are quieter than dogs. If your neighbors don't mind, or share some eggs regularly, you might be ok to have 3 hens where you are.

MOst of the hatchery stock are good layers. Some lay about 5-6-7 eggs a week. SOme lay 3-4 a week. How many eggs are you likely to need. The sweetest birds so far are my buff orpingtons which lay an egg a day; and the speckled sussex which lay almost an egg a day. Buffs lay a med-large egg, and the SS a med egg. If you are accustomed to the large and jumbo eggs are you ready for a smaller egg ( just use more of them) or do you need a large egg size producer???

You are one step ahead of me, I came home with a rabbit today too. That was not in todays plans!! Tossing the duck out of the duck house, putting in the poults, cleaning the pults bin for the bunny.
