New Englanders! Much ado about New England!

Arielle thanks for your reply. I'm used to large eggs, I have 4 yr old twin boys who are in love with chickens. I always loved them too even though we didn't gave any growing up. How can't u love them! My husband has been concerned about how much work 3 hens could be and how we'd keep them warm in winter. I thought maybe beneath out back deck, inside a rabbit hutch or similar , but that wouldn't be fair to them. Your birds sound lovely . I'm thinking hard if there is such a thing as have few chickens nearby in someone else's flock, we could check on and pick up our eggs and help with by paying something modest each month for someone to host them, basically a community garden type idea except with chickens.

I love that you are considering several options. 3 hens is easy. In winter they keep them selves warm with the help of a welll built coop that keeps out the wind but has enough ventilation, and plenty of quality feed.

My girls squish up slose to each other in winter, and spread out in summer.

WIth a little work, hens are personable.

May be start with a coop situation and then consider your own backyard.

Don't know if you can find it on line, Emily ROoney did a peice on illegal chickens in Boston. Meaning law was they are not allowed, but many people have them anyways in the suburban areas of BOston. Even a animal welfare representative said they are quieter than dogs and cleaner too ( re poos) .

I would think not. BUt try finding a local coop and find out! Perhaps just become a member of a local coop or a CSA and get your fresh produce and eggs that way.

Have you considered going to the BOston show in the fall-- it is in North Oxford, MA, to find a breeder; or contact the secretary as the secretary knows everyone and might be able to connect you with a reputable breeder. I"m trying to remember the anme of the org that runs it : BOston ______ and there is the Northeast Bantam club with a secretary to contact also.

I do know Connecticut breeders /exhibitors that come to the N Oxford show.

THere is a BIG show in Spriingfield MA, not sure of the organizers, but again , contact the secretary.

You will need to know which breeds you are seriously interested in as most folk only breed 1-3 different chickens. If you are wanting more sexlinks and generally good layers, TSC or Meyers are a good place to buy.

Poultry must be from tested flocks only, please have your certificate or cards ready upon entry.
Set up is free, no charge.
This will be in the New England Bantam News Letter.
We are working on getting donations item to have to call out one every hour dureing the swap, I am thinking on putting in a gas card.
