Find someone who is willing to go in with you on the chicks. If you are willing to come to Oxford, ME I would do it.

Amy, one thing to keep in mind is to not get your birds from a commercial producer, they have been inoculated against many of the diseases out there, but the one issue is that they are now carriers of poultry diseases, contagious.
You will not have a problem with those birds, but if you add more birds to your flock for instance, they will catch what is there, leaving you with ill.
Don't panic, but it happens to the best of us.

Paris farmers union has a minimum of 6 chicks per order. I am not sure how long after the pick up date they wait for selling the left overs.

i have to tell this story, i have a little old english roo, he is our oldest and he is the boss.
well the neighbors have chickens and they are always penned, but today they have 3-4 little white hens wondering in their yard, well they got too close, atleast thats what my little roo thought and he went and chased them to the other side of the neighbors yard and i was thinking oh boy he will never come back, instantly he came running as fast as he could back. he didnt want them, he just didnt want them so close to his yard! which they were not, but i guess he thought so.LOL

I will have extra Orloffs, and possibly a few Brabanters end of April to mid May. They are both very good winter layers-which is one reason that I got them. I'm hoping to host a Chickenstock in early June in Parsonfield, and there will be one earlier in Oxford. Welcome!

Is he a little bit of a tough guy?

he is the boss of the other birds, not me or the kids, he is a good boy . my std cochin roo is scared to death of him.

Thanks to all who replied. You've all been so helpful! Its nice to have a place to get all this info, since I'm still fairly new to the whole process. Last year we got meat birds, so had no problem meeting the minimum order requirerments, but this year we've decided not to do them.
I've had a few very nice people om me about having some that they would sell, and I think I may go that way, so I can get a few different kinds, and not have to order more than I wanted to get. So if anyone else has chicks available or will soon, somewhat near where I am, please, feel free to pm me! I have no problam traveling a little bit to pick up!
Also, I have to ask, what breeds do you guys recommend for good egg laying, and ones that are somewhat tolerant of the cold up here in Maine. We want some that look a little different, and that lay some different colored eggs. Any info is appreciated! Thanks again!

Spook, we just got back from the house in Lebanon, and our yard looks just like yours, I'm amazed at how much snow is left up there! And the mud. Oh boy, the lane is so rutted, the neighbors just haven't grasped not driving full speed through the puddles, it only makes the ruts and potholes worse
