Hello,

I am from California, in the Mojave Desert area without city Electric, Water, or Sewage. I am on 2 1/2 acres and that is alot of room for Chickens.

One day I bid on eBay for Araucana birds. These were Lavender Colored Show bird Eggs. Unfortunately, nothing hatched. I would appreciate
any mailing tips, Re: How to Receive eggs from the UK to the Us in regards to shipping time. Do you have access to Lavender Araucana's from where you are? There is a large Aracuana club out there somewhere, it is on the internet.

I can be reached directly at [email protected].
Thanks in advance.

Not easy to get Araucana's out here. Not available from Hatcheries. Looking for Standard size birds, not Bantams. Looking for Blue egg layers with Ear Tuffs, not Ear Muffs. With or without their tails.
The gene is difficult as in the breeding the gene is fatal to the chicks. One day I will have them, maybe not Lavender, but the Lavender one are beautiful.

Thank you!!!

Suzzie,

Araucanas are a difficult breed to begin with let alone try hatching eggs shipped to you. The hatch rate is very, very low. I bought a few started birds which was well worth the money and time saved. I have some broody hens and an incubator to work with eggs laid here from my purchased pair. Most breeders are not going to sell top of the line stock because they are so hard to breed. But you can get some decent stuff.

These young cockerels are from my first hatch early this summer. They are available for sale and one has a tuft. They came out of tufted, rumpless parents and the hen lays a blue egg.

This is their brother from a second hatch:

You need to decide which characteristics are real important for you. Some breeders do not breed tufted to tufted pairs due to hatch mortality. Some have birds with tails in their breeding pens. You'll end up doing a lot of culling, I just butchered ten birds from a batch of 15 chicks I bought from a breeder. Most of those were tailed and of the 15 chicks, 11 were males.

The money I spent on that box of chicks resulted in very few birds to integrate into my breeding program and the rest, rather expensive BBQ.

So you take your chances.

For me rumpless is #1 and tufts #2. The tufts are hardest to get. Some people are pretty specific on color. I am finding out I like really wild color but that eliminates me from showing. Check out these two chicks from the same parent birds as the blacks above!

One is tufted, the male who has the red. His sister is smooth faced but they are both rumpless.

So if you want a cockerel, some of my young guys are available and I hope to have some unrelated chicks next year and hopefully some of them will be pullets!

BTW- the European araucanas are beared and muffed as a rule, they are not the same as American araucanas.

The Common Grounds fair is in Unity Maine this weekend.
Its a huge fair and if you go on the website it will give you a list of all the workshops they have going on during the day.
I had planned on going, my husband go the day off of work and then my son woke up sick.
Isn't that always the way.

edited for spelling
