NEW EXTENDED RUN FOR EGLU CUBE

Well finally this morning I got the birds in that 8 x 10 extension I’ve been working on. They love it! I have to put 4 foot of that coragated roof panels up for shade and rain. I am rigging up a tow bar system as well.
This chicken farming is expensive. The math so far and no eggs for at least two months away I figure will be $50.00 dozen lol.

Last week my husband asked me if I even knew how much those chickens really cost, and I told him he didn't want to know. It is more about the experience and I wanted my kids to learn more about where food comes from, and being self sufficient. We got our first egg yesterday and my son (7 yrs) was the one who discovered the chicken while she was laying. It was a priceless experience. We have a garden that the kids help with as well, and they are learning what good food really tastes like!

These chickens are all about my granddaughter who will be 3 in September and she has a sister arriving in September as well. We planted wild blue Berries.
I had a garden for YEARS until the deer moved in. I woke up early one Saturday to find 6 small bucks in my garden they totaled it that year. If you look close in the picture you can see I have started to till some of my garden up. I won't be planting until I retire in a couple of years and put a fence up.
My chickens are going to winter in the garden area. I will cover in the run with clear plastic (with ventilation). I will purchase the insulation blanket for the cube.
It's a wonderful thing to have the kids involved.

I don't dare tell you what I got into these 6 chickens
I know. I have been fishing wild Atlantic Salmon over 45 years. If you add up 4 wheel drives, countless fly rods and reels, fishing camp, thousands of hours traveling eating in restaurants, fly tying materials, I could go on forever, I would have been able to retire 10 years ago. What fun would that have been saving every cent with no life expediences to show for it.

We have a lot of deer here as well. There are 3 who seem to live in the woods behind our house. We planted fruit trees and had the deer nibbling on the branches early spring. We sprayed them with an animal repellant and haven't had any more issues. We also have wild blueberry, blackberry and black raspberry. I love watching the kids pick the raspberries and blueberries (which are ripening now) and pop them in their mouth.
