We fenced in the back corner of our yard just for the chickens! We lost one to a hawk this February, and they've been locked up in their coop/run a lot since then. Now that we have plenty of tree cover, they can play in their own little yard. Also making some covered A frames for them to hide under, and I'd like to plant some large decorative grasses as extra cover too. I found that if I place large heavy flat stones around new plantings, they can't dig them up. And, they haven't been interested in eating the decorative grasses in the rest of the yard at all. Here's hoping...
But, after I let them out into their new yard, one of my black australorps proceeded to jump up onto the top of the new fence. She has NEVER been able to do that before, so the 3 of them will have some feather clipping done tomorrow!
The fenced in yard area is not predator proof. I don't need it to be, since it's just to keep the chickens in there when they aren't allowed to wander the rest of the yard. Their coop/run is very secure though. We managed to do the whole fence with leftovers from building our deck, we only had to get some hardware and a roll of hardware cloth. Now I have to go figure out
why one of the hermit crabs is chirping, they only do that when they're mad about something....
