Quincy IL
Hi all! I've been lurking and decided it's time to introduce myself!

I'm John in Quincy IL. We bought 6 chicks at the local farm store just before Easter. Our girls are 13 weeks old. We have a (2) Barred Rocks, Wanda and Daphne, a Cinnamon Queen, Crystal, a Buff Orpington, Pricilla, A Golden Laced Wyandotte, Emma, and a Rhode Island Red, Queeny.

We decided to keep chickens so my children could understand that their food came from somewhere other than the supermarket. We also have a self-sufficiency attitude in this house and wanted to practice for when we can move out of the city to some more acreage.

I thought raising chickens would be kind-of nice, that it would be nice to have eggs, etc. What I didn't plan on was falling in love with them. I had no idea that they would be so interesting, engaging and just downright fun! Watching them jostle for place on the top roost in the evening is better than any television show! Who knew chickens could have such personalities!?!?!?

I had feared that raising chickens would lead to raising other non-traditional city animals. What it lead to was CARPENTRY!!!!

We brooded them in the house (right next to the dinner table). We started in a farm tub, grew into a tupperware storage container and eventually, I had to build a wooden brooder.

Since then, I robbed the back of our garage, built a coop, built an outdoor run. I've built a little outdoor shade shelter for them...... etc. Need to cut some additional ventilation into the garage, so I bought some soffit vents and ridge vents today.... it never ends, does it?

I'll get some pics up when I can snap some pictures in the daylight, but mostly just wanted to introduce myself and say I've really enjoyed some of the info from the forum, and hope to contribute where I can.

Hi!
