Hello I am brand new at this and just wanted to say hello. My wife and I just got our new flock today there are 6 1 day olds 4 amerucanos and 2 prod reds. so far so good. I do have one question though. Our chicks are inside until they are old enough to be outside do we need to leave the heat lamp on 24-7 or can i turn it off for a little while during the day?

Thanks

Welcome! You'll want to leave the heat lamp on. Chicks that young will need the warmth. If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask!

The first week temps should be 95 degrees, each succeeding week lower by 5 degrees. Heat lamps would be on 24/7 unless you live in an extremely hot climate. Always have the heat lamp positioned so that it doesn't cover the entire brooder area. If chicks are cold they will move closer to the heated area. If they are too warm they will move away from it.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congratulations on your new chicks :celebrate Raising chicks is a fantastic experience and lots of fun. I too agree that your lamp needs to be 24/7 for such Young chicks. At such a young age they need to be able warm themselves up at all times. The learning centre has a lovely section on raising chicks with many excellent articles in raising them, here is the link https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-and-raising-chicks

Wishing you the very best of luck with your chicks In the future. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat. Everyone here to help with any questions you may have :frow

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. X2 on drumstick diva. A chick's approximate heat needs by age is as follows: Week 1 90 - 95°; Week 2 85 - 90°; Week 3 80 - 85°; Week 4 75 - 80°; Week 5 70 - 75°; Week 6 65 - 70°. By week 7, the chicks should be fully feathered and no longer need any external heat source. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your chicks.
