Hi I have just 6 regular brown laying hens they are 5 months they have been laying for a month. It is kind of a backyard set up although we live on a rural property.
We are in Nova Scotia Canada so it can be very cold so we have a small insulated coop inside a fenced run inside the wood shed, and a heat lamp for when it is really cold.
They the hens were ment as pets for my homeschooling 11 year old but she is not been doing the care in the winter. We have 5 cats,a house rabbit(he is 7 but smaller than the cats) and two Hamsters. And two other girls a 8 year old and one who’s 20. This is our first time with birds I was thinking she might do 4-H with them but the leader our oldest had for goats that we really like gave up being poultry leader so we haven’t. I lived with chickens at my dads briefly 20 years ago at 20 and I had been a vegetarian but thought I could eat them but I think my kids might go the other way.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens Kids can run hot and cold on care of critters I grew up on farm
