Sorry to post one right after another, but considering the interest that my use of a pellet gun to drive off a marauding dog I have some more ideas for those of you who can't/won't use a pellet gun for legal or moral reasons:
1. My first was a children's bow (25-35 pound pull) with a blunted or padded tip arrow. The problem with that it does take some skill to hit what you're aiming at. In the same vain a crossbow is a possibility, however most are to powerful to be non-lethal. After all, we don't want to kill or permanently injure them, just run them off.
2. My second and best idea I got this morning over my first cup of coffee. Since dogs hate loud shrill noises try
a whistle. I tried it on my hens and they don't seem to mind. They just all looked up as if to say, "What the heck was that?" and went back to feeding, scratching and laying (one was already on the nest). I next tried it on our two dogs (poor girls
). They both went running away and kept running as long as I kept blowing.
The other advantages to the whistle are obvious:
1. Non-lethal.
2. Legal everywhere.
3. No skill or training required. If you can breathe you can use it.
4. Highly portable. Just carry one in your pocket or on a lanyard.
5. Cheap.
Hope someone finds this useful.
