I'm Lauren and I'm new to BYC, and a newbie to raising chickens.
I just moved to Greencastle, IN about two months ago with my husband and 3 yo daughter.
We've had our chickens about a week. I have a Rooster, and two hens. I am unsure of their breeds. I 'adopted' my chicken babies from a friend. So far I think they are adjusting well. I was receiving eggs the day after they moved in. :)

So far I've read some great threads on BYC and can't wait to learn more!

Hi Lauren, welcome to BYC!

It's nice to have you here. Good luck finding out what breed of birds you have.

I'd recommend you get more females to prevent the rooster from over-working the 2 girls you have now. The recommended ratio is 1 roo to 8-10 hens. A rooster that over-mates hens can seriously hurt them and cause a lot of stress. If you just want fresh eggs for your family, you don't need a rooster (unless you want fertile eggs for hatching).

Thanks for joining us, hope you like it here

Hi Lauren! I live about 12 miles from you, lol. Nice to meet you! There is a very active Indiana thread on here called Indiana BYCers. Have fun!

Welcome to BYC, Lauren. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds. X2 on NorthFChick; if you intend to keep a rooster, definitely add at least 8 or 9 more hens for him to spread his breeding aggressions out on. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your breeds identified. :o)
