Welcome!
I grew up on the northwest side of Indy and DH on the northeast.

Ozark Hen-

Yep - we luckily got our run and house together (ahem at the last minute hee hee) before the chickens came. We have been wanting to do this for over a year and started preparing about a month ago.

We did the mother earth news run design and it works well, but I am still worried about raccoons and possums digging around the perimeter. We ended up taking chicken wire and surrounding the run with the chicken wire and burying it underneath mulch. I am not wanting to find any chicken casualties!!

Our chicken coop is something we ordered online. In hindsight, I wish the doors were designed a bit better, but the gals seem to like it. In fact, we are already up to 3 eggs and it has only been a little over a day!!! Guess who had eggs over easy this morning with homemade raisin toast...

Welcome to the "Biggest Backyard in the world!"

Thanks for giving the girls such a nice home!

Welcome Indychick! Indy here also, about 15-20 mins sw of downtown Indpls, we are new to keeping chicks too, we have 19 chickens, 8 diff breeds, some are almost a yr old, we have a great place we found for all of our chickens needs and wants, not far from us so not to far from you, dont think i can post in here, so feel free to pm us anytime!

Thanks Everyone!

We are all egg-cited about the egg production. I will post a photo once I figure out how to do that...

I tell you, these chickens definitely have a pecking order. We have established who is boss around here...our Barred rock was guarding the roost last night. When I went to close the door, she was there watching me the whole time not in the nest box, not on the roost, but sitting right in the opening of the door. I think she has identity issues - she must be a rooster in disguise!

Indiana Hens - they mowed that grass before the night was over! Luckily I had some wheat grass sprouted as a science experiment for my son and we just fed that to them (they loved it). We can't wait until the weather is warm and they are accustomed to their home so we can let them range. So far, 4 brown eggs but no green ones. Our little Americauna is still figuring things out I think...

Shellbell- Sounds like you've got a great place if you can have that many chickens! We are still looking for our mini farm but we will make do with our 4 girls and maybe get a few chicks in the meantime. Are you within city limits? If so, I haven't found anything in the municipal codes that has a limit or restriction. Let me know if you have!

Indy, it sounds like you have a nice set up and we can't wait to see pics. Dh's family and all his high school friends are either in Indy or around there. Glad to have you!

Welcome from Indianapolis. We are on the southwest side. We got pullets and 1 cockrel from Indiana Hens last year and just love them all!
