HI to all out there. We are new to chickens and looking forward to getting our first in the next month or so. We think we're getting mostly Rhode Island Reds and maybe some Barred Rock from a friend who is adding to his flock. To start we're looking at 6 or less if not all survive the start.

We're just getting our coop finished between rainy days. Our design is based on Paul Joynes well insulated chicken coop and modified it for our needs. You can see the full wrap in hardware cloth as we think we will have mink to deal with plus coyotes have been seen recently.

Hello and welcome to BYC! Just a thought, but perhaps a predator proof run around the coop might be a better use of the HC. My main coop is a sturdy shed with a run that is totally enclosed with 19 gauge HC and galvanized metal roofing. The chickens have plenty of room to safely play when they are not enjoying their daily supervised "free range" time. I don't see any openings for ventilation. That's so important, especially in winter.

We'll be keeping the hens inside at night, down the road we may do the whole run with hardware cloth but right now it's almost impossible to find, everyone is sold out. We were very lucky to get what we did. Sooo the run with be basic chicken wire.

As for ventilation we have roof vents both passive and one with a fan installed so we should be good.

Thanks for the links, I'm well familiar with forums hanging out of a few motorcycle ones pretty much every day.

Thanks for the welcome.
